Since 1995, I’ve navigated the intersection of professional logistics (Compass 🧭) and the unexpected of travel (Chaos🔥) .With 20+ years in the industry and experiencing 30 countries, I look past the Game of Thrones sets to admire the heart of historical UNESCO sites. Building the blueprints that help you burn the "Bucket List" crowds and live for those "Life Adventure Goals" that sweet spot that truly matters.

Dubrovnik has been thrusted into the spotlight with Game Of Thrones popularity and it's spin offs… but the city and the country is so much more!!

The reality is a beautifully clean city with heart welcoming locals.

Depending on the time of year you decide or life dictates you go, Dubrovnik can have a very different vibe.

🐝Spring & Summer 🌞: Bye bye Locals ~ Hello Tourists.

This time of year brings warm weather, little to no rain and a plethora of choices for dining… but it also brings high prices, more lines and less local interactions. It's no longer just the tour companies which are only just starting to really rev up you contending with but now cruise lines are docking.

From April to September with an average high between 68 to 85, without climate changes, wave upon wave of tourists crash into this small old fortified city. Cramming its lovely narrow allies and sucking away the ambiance of the ironic balconies that seem to be held up by Bougainvillea, a native South American plant, that has become a symbol of the Mediterranean. If your trying to walk the city walls, you are playing a game of “Dodge the Influencers”,  good luck just trying to enjoy the view and the moment.

The history and culture becomes lost among the thousands that are only there for the movie scenes and to sit on a fake throne. If we want the illusion of power, we will to sit on the throne of England or of Imperial China (Figuratively, not literally, that is just WRONG!). The ones that have yielded true power; But to each their own, everyone is different.

The walls and fortifications as seen in Game Of Thrones are not viewed with the understanding that these walls, started in the 13th century, have never been breached by a hostile invader or that they are considered one of the best preserved medieval walls in Europe making them and the city they protect a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Everywhere you move within the city walls you find people. There is not one ally or passage that a single person can't be found! In a small walled city, that could be madding, it makes for anyone who wishes to wander in spiritual silence go mentally crazy.

It is not all bad. For those that enjoy heat, half city and half beach days this is your time..and you are not alone. This is a great time for families since school is out and parents can still teach without actively teaching. Woman traveling solo that prefers crowds, this is also your time.

During this time frame more hotels and restaurants are open catering to any worldly style and tastes. You're likely to meet more traveling tourists than you are locals that don't work in hospitality, keeping you within your comfort zone.

This would also be a good time for those that are still in the “Bucket List Mentality” to check off their “bucket list” items instead of experiencing Life Adventure Goals.. You can still find pockets of locals in a park outside the city away from the protection of the wall, should the explorer in you beckon for satisfaction.

🍂Autumn & Winter ⛄: Bye Bye Tourists ~ Welcome Back Home Locals

Our favorite time is a 5 week sweet spot. Starting 3rd week in October to the 1st week of Dec. The average high is between 65 to 55 degrees F. The weather is still warm(-ish), there is a higher chance of rain but still less than New England at this time so we'll take it. We bring a few layers, it can start chilly in the am.. warm up in the afternoon and be chilly again once the sun drops and good rain gear. The 1st week of December is also the time just before the Christmas Markets really ramp up, which can also be touristy but not like those of Germany, Italy & Austria.

During this time just walking 75 feet off the main pedestrian areas will transport you to a peaceful alley where your only companion may be a cat lounging on a wall to a private courtyard. Those same balconies still look ironically held in place by the now less lush, but still blooming Bougainvillea. It's easier to picture someone in medieval dress hanging over the edge when you're not being knocked into because everyone is cramming into the alley. The walls have hardly any influencers (they chase high peak seasons adding to the crush), you are able to have more adventures and also interact with locals enjoying the 1.2 mile walk around the city with amazing views. You have this UNESCO site to practically yourself. The city finally breathes a sigh of fresh air.

You'll encounter families taking a špancir (leisurely stroll) along the Stradun (main pedestrian area), children playing football in the squares, and genuine community life returning within the fortified walls. The energy evolves from performing for tourists to just living life, offering an unprecedented opportunity for the silent observer to truly soak up the atmosphere of a living and breathing medieval city.

This is a time where the restaurants that are open are the ones that are locally cherished. Instead of choosing from a deluge of tourist trap eateries offering similar menus, you get to dine where the locals do!

These establishments pride themselves on traditional Dalmatian cuisine, fresh catch of the day, local seasonal produce and authentic local wines, all served without the rush of a “turnover time”. You’ll greeted by servers that are more relaxed and happy to chat about the city’s history and hidden gems. They will have the time to offer an immersive cultural experience that simply doesn't exist during the “summer invasion”.

In our three decades of crossing borders, we’ve learned that the 'best' time to visit a place is rarely the most popular one. Compass always points toward the sweet spots where the logistics of travel meet the soul of the destination. Chaos’ off-season if you want the version of Dubrovnik that hasn’t been edited for a screen . It’s in those quiet, unscripted moments, the ones that don't make it onto an influencer's feed, where you truly find the heartbeat of Croatia.

Really, NO matter what season Dubrovnik is a city worth exploring.

Stop chasing the illusion of power on a fake throne and go stand on the walls that have never been breeched. Dubrovnik isn't just a backdrop for a story; it is the story. From the ironic blooming Bougainvillea of spring to the crisp, local-led winters, this city is waiting to be explored. The question isn't whether you should go—it’s which version of the city you are ready to engage with?
