Burn the “Bucket List”: Live Your “Life Adventure Goals” (2026 Life Travel Guide)

With over 30 countries under our belt, we’ve never checked boxes, we destroy them. We don't believe in the "Bucket List" . We’ve spent our career & life navigating the gap between "doing" and "becoming." We’ve learned that a rigid itinerary is the fastest way to miss on an Unexpected Life Adventure Goal.

We’ve all been told to make that "Bucket List" 📋  —a list of things to do before we are pushing up petunias; but there’s a self induced poison in that logic. A bucket list is a sprint towards mortality. A desperate scramble to put a check in a few boxes. Treating this incredible world like a supermarket and our lives like a grocery list (We hate grocery shopping!).

“Burning The Bucket List” doesn't mean burning your dreams (though Chaos disagrees). It’s about blowing up the "checklist" mentality to make room for something deeper: A Life Adventure Map.

This shift is the difference between “doing” and “becoming”. Moving from a mindset of "someday" to the state of being present where there is only “now”.

When you look back, do you want to see all the boxes checked …. or all the people and experiences gained?

All our years of travels to over 30 plus countries, we have yet to check any box. Every time we go to Athens, gazing up at the Acropolis always gives us that same feeling as the first time; it’s the same with the Colosseum or Pantheon in Rome.

Life Adventure Goals are what you make of them. They can be long term that require preparations or they can be as simple as “I always wanted to go or do ....” and then see what Unexpected Life Adventure Goals come out of it. Like dipping your toes in the Nile where the crocs actually are, above the Aswan Dam (🔥) or swimming with the locals in the Nile thanks to our awesome tour guide Kaled🧭(below the Dam, no crocs!).

We don't like to put limits on ourselves here at CompassChaos13 (okay, Chaos yes she needs them) but we do like organized chaos, so below are just some suggested categories.

 Long Game Goals

Some adventures aren't meant to be spontaneous snapshots. While every destination requires presence prior to arrival; some are transformative sagas that demand it. When you destroy the checklist, you begin to value the Training Goals.

If truth be told here by us, Our Long Games are: Hike the Inca, Appalachian Trail(s) & Everest Base Camp, Silk Road by camel and a trek through The Sahara but by horse or camel!

Whether it’s the Appalachian Trail,  the Camino de Santiago (official site for those that would like the certificate at the end) or the *Inca Trail, these adventures don't start at the trailheads. It begins the moment you decide the time is now. Your next move is the morning you wake up at 4am, jug a coffee, throw on your sweats and put a weighted pack on your back to walk the neighborhood. Maybe, *Climbing Kilimanjaro, reaching *Everest Base Camp, or trekking the *The Sahara Desert is more your thing. Regardless, none of these are just a 10-day trip; it’s a minimum 24-month evolution of your physical and mental grit.

*These experiences require licensed guides for your safety and locals, there are no official sites for guides, only the permits required for entry, which should be handled by the company. Do your research or contact your travel agent!

The "training" isn't a chore—it’s the next chapter in your evolution. The first was making the conscious decision based on your research that you are going to do this! You are living that goal every time you hit the gym or research gear.

Half – Time Mental Clarity

There are "Beckoning Places" that offer goals you didn't even know you wanted until you went. This is where you leave room for the version of you that isn't even a thought yet.

Congrats, you have your “Long-Term” Game! You’ve been saving, researching, planning your almost there you can taste it. Mentally, you’ve had enough! That everyday work grind, to get that savings where it is, the hours of research & planning to make sure everything is still up to date; on top of the domestic duties that come with life. You need a “Half-Time”. This is for those places that beckon. Now is the perfect time to find one that won’t hit your long term savings hard and give you the mental clarity you need to get back on track.

No “Long-Term” Game in mind, this is where your travel resides be it by choice or economic situation, Great! You are still doing the same thing as having a long game but just a steady pace.

Albania: You might go for history, but you’ll find a new life goal in the family style hospitality of a stranger.

Live Music from OTANTIK Turkish Restaurant & Bistro in Durres, Albania November 2025. Enjoying the wonderful fresh food and full stomachs we had a local vocalist, Omed (sorry if I spelled it wrong) who was incredible. His tone and pitch were amazing. I may not know the Albanian language the feeling behind the songs was immediately conveyed.

Places aren't just countries, they are also areas where you can witness events.

Northern Lights for instance is a different experience in Alaska than in Iceland, Siberia or even the Arctic. Standing under the Aurora Borealis sparks an unexpected goal: the continued pursuit of Internal Clarity & Complete Presence.

Why should this matter?

Destruction of the list allows for "blank spots." It allows you to be "found" by the destination, changing your perspective on what a meaningful life looks like mid-journey.

Love of the Short Game: Quick & Easy

Let’s be real, very few of us can afford to do the “Long Game” & a “Half–Time”, most of us fall into one or the other. Working class folks, not poor not rich ….. Just working to survive.

So what we can scrape to save for travel goes to 1 goal at a time. If that goal is a “Long Game” it might be years before going anywhere and saving enough; which means no “Half–Time” because you're focused on your goal!

Perhaps, right now your “Long Game” isn’t a spark, it’s the “Half–Time” where you reside. That means you're focused on places, what they offer, and the prices that come with them. But does that mean that you don’t get to live? Hell No! This is why we love our “Short Games”.

We define these as samples you can find in your own backyard while helping to support local business & your own community.

Live next to a body of water but never been kayaking? Water-skiing? Jet-Skiing? Surfing? Belly-Boarding? This is the perfect opportunity to dip in your toes … or a paddle.

No water next to you, mountains is more your backyard view. Ever been rock-climbing? Mountaineering? Repelling? Canyoning? Strap on that gear, the shoes and ropes … find those holds!

We didn’t forget about our friends that wake up to see dessert, forest, plains, or ice & snow.

Ever Trek to the next village or the nearest oasis for our dessert friends?

For our forest dwellers, ever go Spelunking/Caving or true survival camping?

Have our Plains peeps ever ridden a horse bare back to camp under the stars?

Live in the land of the ice & snow .. ever been dog-sledding, Ice Caving or Glacier Caving? This is the perfect time for you to “test” the waters, land, ice & snow.

Experience has shown us at CompassChaos13, it’s easier to find out that we don’t like something while we are still in our own backyard; than to find out in an unknown area. Testing doesn't take away from the experience or the destination, it enhances them. The confidence that is gained in your own backyard is carried with you to your destination. Making you more relaxed and able to be more present in your surroundings.

Checking-Off vs. Checking-In: Another Mental Re-set

Why is this destruction vital? A list is the consumerist approach 🛒 to our planet . Adventure is a spiritual one 🧘‍♀️.

For a visual of the difference on the mindsets:

    • Primary Focus: Sites or Destinations as something to mark off

    • Outcome Perspective: You don’t do it, You failed

    • Driving Force: Racing against Mortality

    • Experience Impact: Did it, over it, forget it

  • Primary Focus: Personal Growth

Outcome Perspective: Evolution and Adaptation of yourself and the journey

Driving Force: Celebration of capabilities and strength

Experience Impact: Imbedded in your spirit. A memory is triggered by a smell, a sound or sight.

There should be no checked boxes or crossed out lines; instead a vibrant tapestry of moments where you were fully and unapologetically awake.

How to Chart Your Map Today 🌐

“Bucket list” destruction happens the moment you decide that an adventure is afoot (Thanks Sherlock!). You don't need a plane ticket to start; you only need to change how you value your time

  • Identify one "Long-Game" Goal: Something that requires you to learn a skill or build endurance.

  • Leave a "Blank Spot": Choose a region that confuses or intrigues you, and go. Not necessarily having a day to day plan.

  •  Audit Your Motives: Ask yourself, "Am I doing this to say I did it, or to see who I become because of it?"

Stop counting down the days until you can "check it off." Start counting the ways the journey is making you feel alive today. Your life is the grandest adventure of all—it’s time to start charting the course. No more one check closer to the grave….. But a map of how you lived that “ —” marked on it.

The end result is a mental, physical & emotional toughness knowing that no matter what … you got this!
