Cabo, Mexico: Why Lover's Beach isn’t offered to Cruise Line Passengers

Questioning why Lover's Beach isn't on your cruise excursion list? We’re breaking down the logistics, the "dry landing" chaos, and how to reach the Arch on your own terms.

Picture It….. You’re standing on the deck of a 150,000-ton mega-ship, staring at the golden cliffs of Land’s End. You see that tiny, pristine sliver of sand tucked between the jagged rocks—Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor). It looks like paradise but your your shore excursion list show nothing. Take it from our experience, you won’t EVER find this excursion on standard itinerary.

Zip-lining? Sure. Tequila tasting for the 100th time? Naturally, but a trip to the most iconic beach in Mexico? Nada.

At CompassChaos13, we don’t do the "pre-packaged" anything. We do the real deal and here is the unfiltered truth about why the cruise lines won’t take you there. We show you how to burn the "safe" itinerary so you can get there yourself.

“Why Cruise Lines Ghost Lover's Beach

Cruise lines love two things: safety and schedules and Lover’s Beach offers neither.

There is no pier at Lover’s Beach. To get there, you have to hop off / back on a small boat (a panga) into knee-deep water. Sometimes the water is calm, other times, such as our experience it comes with swells.

For a cruise line with 4,000 passengers having varying mobility, that’s a liability and negligence lawsuit waiting to happen. The cruise lines are not about to offer an excursion that comes with high-risk safety issues nor are they going to put a few 100 people on this tiny beach with no facilities either!

Only adding to the reasoning why NOT to offer it, literally 50 yards away from the calm Sea of Cortez side is Divorce Beach, which faces the Pacific Ocean. The rip currents there will swallow you whole. Cruise lines are not going to risk a passenger wandering twenty feet in the wrong direction and getting swept out to sea. There would be nothing that anyone could do.

When the swells get big (and they do!), jumping that boat in swells is like trying to put mittens on a squirrel. The real worry is should the weather turn, you’re stuck on a small little beach with no facilities until the weather clears. Cruise ships have a "we leave at 4:00 PM" rule, and they don't wait for "trapped" anybody, unless you are on one of their booked excursions.

Chaos' Map: How to Get There Anyway

You’re reading this, so we are going with, you’re not looking for a "safe" tour. You’re looking for an experience. Don’t worry, We Got You!

Here’s how to execute the mission:

Step 1: Tender to the Pier. Once off your ship's tender, it drops you at the Cabo San Lucas marina, ignore the guys selling "City Tours."

Step 2: Find the Panga. Look for the water taxis or boat tours that highlight Lover’s Beach. You should pay about $15–$20 Per Person USD for a round trip.

Step 3: Negotiation. Tell them you want the "Arch Tour" with a drop-off at Lover's Beach. Pro-tip: Arrange a specific pickup time with your captain. Note: Make sure you advise on a TIME TO COME BACK TO GET YOU, you don’t want a one way trip! They are remarkably punctual, timing it to their tour rounds. Don’t forget to tip!

Survival Guide for the Sands

  • Vibe: Swimmable turquoise waters

    Activity: Snorkeling, selfies and swimming

Facilities: None, bring everything you need (snacks, towels, sunscreen). There is usually a person selling drinks so bring CASH also.

    WARNING: AT YOUR OWN RISK

  • Vibe: Majestically violent and deadly

Activity: Sunbathing only and cliff selfies

    Facilities: ZERO, NADA, NONE

WARNING: DO NOT SWIM ON THIS SIDE!! IT WILL KILL YOU

Living a life of an adventurer means knowing when to breaking the rules and what risks are worth taking. The cruise line won't take you to Lover's Beach because they have little to no control. But you … You can handle a 30-minute panga ride/tour, little salt water on your knees and a possible spin in the washing machine.

The results? While everyone else is sitting in a "Mexican Cultural Center" (honestly, a tourist shopping area with a fountain) instead you’re standing at the end of the earth, watching the Pacific meet the Sea of Cortez.

Don't just see the map. You are Challenged To Be the map.
