Why Travel to 30+ Countries Beats 3000 Algorithms: A Vet’s Edge
A 20 Travel Industry Vet & Global Explorer / 30+ Countries Experienced. We’ve seen travel go from pen & paper to A.I. chats. We thinks it’s time to share our secrets that travel sites don’t want you to know. Honestly, nothing beats good old fashion boots on the ground experience.
A.I. is a powerful research assistant, honestly we use it for our personal and client travels, & for our blog page, but not all in the way you would think. We will get to that.. First you must understand some common sense un-written rules of A.I. before you go jumping in to utilize its power.
It is a ROBOT… it uses math formulas a/k/a algorithms to produce the closest answer YOU are looking for, because of the way you worded your ask.
It is searching 100’s of sites, it does not verify information found in the site NOR does it verify credibility.
It is designed to take in information, store it, and use it to mold to know you.
IT IS A ROBOT!!!!! We say this again…. IT IS A ROBOT.
So why did we repeat ourselves so many times about being a robot? You will forget.. We found ourselves saying thank you as if we were talking to a human! 🤣 Crazy..
A.I. can never smell the spices hanging in the air in the markets of Marrakech and see a freshly severed head of a ram in a basket heading to that same market; nor can it tell you the name of the person to ask for to ensure you’re treated like family. After two decades in the industry, we’ve learned that the best travel happens where the plan & data fail.
🥾 Boots on the Ground Reality Check 🥾
A.I. can tell you a lot about hotels in an area; Star rating, review’s, but can you trust it? Does it know there is a difference in 3 star ratings across the globe? Does it know that 10 minutes in one country means something different in another? We bet it doesn’t know that there are people that will actually write a review without ever stepping foot on site; but agents do. We talk, we drink, we talk more, we eat, we talk more….
And if we haven't been…. Well, we know a gal!
How CompassChaos13 uses A.I.: Places change even after only 5 years, so we always start with an A.I. search of the areas we know, but we limit the search for A.I. by specifically asking for only that last 3 months of information, across all platforms then summarize it, and provide feedback. We use it also to find new places to experience. We get weeks worth of research in a few hours. While we want A.I. to do all the “heavy lifting” for us. We take all that information and comb through it to ensure accuracy, timing, and credibility.
What is our secret?
Veteran Agent Tip: Look for the "hidden" logistics. If you see "charming cobblestone street" that A.I. recommended from a review(s); Reality is, it’s a nightmare for your luggage, your back due to you hoofing it (a vehicle can’t get up the pedestrian only charming cobblestone street), and usually there are stairs to climb to your room with that luggage. “Cozy” will usually mean giving up: a private bathroom and/or no A/C or Heat (depending on the region) on top of all the above. Here are a few words that should give you pause:
Charming / Cozy / Quaint = No room to move and possibly sharing a bathroom (Hi! Neighbor 😣)
Rustic / Natural Appeal = No A/C & bad Wifi
Classic / Traditional / Original = Worn and looks it
Close proximity = Noise or difficult direct access
Up & Coming = New construction all around
These simple words that marketing teams and A.I. use to promote and sell destinations, have serious impacts on a person’s vacation. That vacation time is so precious and valued that we can longer stand by and watch people fall victim to this crap.
🚨Crisis Management: When the Screen Goes 🚨
When a strike shuts down the road in Greece and your hotel serves you breakfast in your room “just to be safe” or a tropical storm hits the Caribbean, your instincts turn to AI-driven chatbots. Only to have it loop in a cycle of "Something went wrong." As you start to scream “NO Shhh….” or you could just have no access unless you sign into a Wi-Fi!
We still travel Europe without changing out an E-Sim or turning on Global Roaming… Why? There is something to be said about keeping your instincts sharp, only fully relying on yourself. Which makes you more self-reliant, self-aware and independent.
Veteran Agent Tip: In our world of professional travel planning & consulting, we don’t just have a "Plan B"—we have Plans B through Z. While A.I. provides a literal rundown of the weather outside your window, we veteran agents are already three steps ahead. It’s usually not our first rodeo.
Having traveled to over 30 countries, we know which local fixers can be trusted to answer a call at a moment's notice and which "hidden airline hubs" can get you home when major airports are gridlocked. When Mother Nature wins, A.I. offers data; we offer boots on the ground solutions. Working behind the scenes directly with onsite industry staff to ensure you have food, water, and safety.
Pro Tip on Medication:
Always pack more medication than you think you’ll need in its original prescription bottle. However, be aware that some countries prohibit specific medications even with a script. Before you fly, verify requirements directly via that country’s official embassy or consulate website or their customs declaration pages. Not sure where to start, U.S. The Department of State ~ International Travel, is always a good place. Never rely on a third party for legal entry requirements; when in doubt, contact the destination's governing body directly.
🖌️🎨 Marked-up Mirage
We are seeing a rise in “A.I.-Washed” or A.I. Generated everything—hotels, rentals, hell even destinations & attractions, that use A.I. to add eye-grabbing attention to photos and remove any “unsightly’ s” there from. In this new digital world, your eyes are prime real estate, the gateway to your mind which companies hope will produce clicks and generate revenue. Companies use beautiful, bold, and bright imagery to catch your eye, leading you down their captivating rabbit hole of discovery. There is real danger in these tactics. You may have just been set up for disappointment; that enticing picture that showed the beachfront, removed the commercial shipping port in the background. An airbrushed or misrepresented location could ruin your vacation, and you more than likely won’t know until you have your boots on the ground..
How do we know the "eye candy" can be deceiving? Because here at CompassChaos13, we use A.I. to generate the title images for our blog posts. Sacrilege? Let’s be "Chaos Honest." Throughout history, human communication has evolved from cave paintings to the written word, only to recently revert back to pictorials—otherwise known as emojis. Eyes are the gateway to your mind, so yeah we are going to use them also.
What CompassChaos13 DOESN’T do is use A.I. to generate photos or places we have been or not, for use on within our articles. Any pictures we post in our articles have been taken by CompassChaos13; IF we ever have to use an A.I. photo in an article we will be 100% honest about it, like we are with about the title photos.
For personal photos, we’re a huge fan of the Google Magic Eraser. When we’re traveling and only have a split second to grab a shot, we don't get frustrated by crowds. If someone walks into the frame or stands too close, we can simply erase them! It’s incredibly satisfying to remove a stray pole, a distracting streetlight, or an "unsightly" stranger with a swipe of a finger. (Disclaimer: This is not a paid endorsement; I just genuinely love the tool!)
Veteran Agent Tip: While we love these tools for my scrapbooks, we also know their dangers. Having been lost in these very streets (or knowing a local "gal" who has), we can spot a "marked-up" promotional photo instantly. Knowing the actual layout, the neighborhood's true grit, and the authentic vibe is humanly priceless. Any time a photo looks too perfect; to bright, to colorful, to big or just to…. means it’s usually not what it appears.
Can you spot the fake below? (Hint: We tried to keep it easy… only 1 has a logo at the bottom)
Images of Bermuda’s Glass Beach in order from left to right: Top Left POV from beach; Top Middle POV from above; Top Right A.I. Generated (if you guessed this GREAT JOB!); Bottom Left POV on the beach direct; Bottom Right POV close up of sea glass.
3 Major Things Things AI Always Gets Wrong
As someone who has navigated the backstreets of every country we have ever traveled and the train stations of those same countries, I’ve noticed that A.I. lacks "contextual common sense." Here are three things the algorithm consistently fails to understand:
Real Life Walking
AI looks at a map and sees 500 meters. Is that 500 meters on a flat surface, uphill or downhill? I look at a map of Lisbon and know that 500 meters is a 45-degree incline on slick cobblestones. If you’re traveling with kids or heavy bags, that incline sucks, especially if you are staying right near Castelo Sao Jorge, like we did in 2022. So while A.I. is great for getting a general idea of distance, it takes a great agent to tell clients that have mobility issues, this may be a slower more difficult vacation than expected due to the hills.
The Vibe & Spirit of a Neighborhood
An algorithm will identify a "high-traffic tourist zone" as the best place to stay because it has the most reviews. Ask yourself, Do you really want to stay in a high traffic area? People, restaurants with outdoor dining, and shopping all come with noise. We know that three blocks over is a local pocket with better coffee, half the price rooms, peaceful surroundings and zero pickpockets. After 10 minutes of general chit chat with clients we can usually tell if they will truly enjoy the neighborhood or if they just saw something on social media that A.I. kicked up. Matching the neighborhood is just as important as not offering that 45 minute layover to a client. If we put a client that enjoys being in bed by 9pm in a high traffic area with cafes, restaurants and shops….. We will be hearing about it before their feet ever step back on home soil. *Side bonus clients get to vent on their travel agents and the agents try to make things right, good luck trying to get anywhere with A.I.
A Required Human Buffer
A.I. plans connections like a rocket scientist building the next new rocket to take humans into space. For example, did you know that a 45-minute layover is legal according to FAA & AI standards! Have you ever had to do a 45 minute layover in Charles De Gaulle in Paris when you have to go through customs… stressful, is being nice. Any international trip, nothing less than 3 hour layover. Why on Goddess’ Green Earth would we do that? If our outbound plane is late getting into the connection gateway, guess what, we still have time to get through customs & immigration, find our gate and still pee all without feeling overwhelmed.
A veteran knows that in 30+ countries, "on time" is a guideline (Japan & German are exceptions). We always build in the "human buffer" for late ferries, slow customs, and the inevitable "Chaos" moment. It’s not just in transportation that the buffer should be applied; attractions is a majorly overlooked area where a buffer is rarely applied. A.I. has factored on average 2.5 hours for you to experience the Acropolis. Yeah, if you were on a guided tour which would also include other sites around Athens. Did you know that you could spend 2 hours just walking around the Parthenon & other sites on top? Then you also need to add the sites along the slopes that make up the rest of the Acropolis. We can tell you, after 3 times in Athens in the last 4 years, we still spend at least half the day re-exploring and still discovering new sites along its slopes.
